The content of the total lipids, including structural and storage, and fatty acids (FAs) was evaluated in the liver and gonads of females of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus from different spawning grounds of the White Sea: in Sel’dyanaya Inlet and Kolyushkovaya Lagoon (Kandalaksha Bay), and in Konyukhov Bay (Onega Bay). The content of total lipids in the gonads was high (from 14.25 to 20.05% of dry weight); while significant differences in their content, as well as in the quantitative profile of the main lipid classes, may indicate differences in the spawning peculiarities. In the gonads, the amount of the structural phospholipids was different, but the most pronounced variations were registered in the content of the reserve triacylglycerols and their components, in particular, two essential polyunsaturated FAs (22:6n-3, docosahexaenoic, and 20:5n-3, eicosapentaenoic), and a monounsaturated FA (16:1n-7, palmitoleic). In the gonads of the fish sampled in Konyukhov Inlet, the highest level of reserve triacylglycerols and palmitoleic acid was registered; this can positively affect the body weight and viability of the coming embryos. The increased content of physiologically significant n-3 polyenic FA (22:6n-3 and 20:5n-3) in the gonads of the stickleback females at this stage of the reproductive cycle may be associated with increased need for these acids by the coming embryos.

The fatty acid composition of total lipids in the muscles, liver, and gonads of adult specimens of the three-spined stickleback from the White Sea has been studied. In particular, a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly those of ω-3 families, was found in the gonads and muscles. Among these, essential eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, as well as docosapentaenoic acid, were dominant. The relationship between the fatty acid composition in different organs of the three-spined stickleback and of the other fish species and the effect of complex environmental factors is discussed. Particular fatty acids are tissue-specific, and their composition is also evidence of the physiological state of the organism. These results can be used both in the development of a methodology in the formula for the lipid basis of food ingredients extracted from marine hydrobionts of the Arctic region, which are an important renewable natural resource, and in research on the physiological and biochemical state of the fish during the process of their development under normal and changing environmental factors.

The comparative dynamics of lipids and some fatty acids in the muscles of mature females and males of threespine stickleback from the White Sea kept in aquariums under the conditions of experimental short-term fasting and subsequent renewal of nutrition under different feeding regimens was studied. The most significant differences and the selectivity of lipid utilization are demonstrated between females and males in the process of an aquarium experiment, including their fasting and various dietary regimens. The results indicate the ability of the metabolic systems of male stickleback muscles to rapidly recover and store the requisite level of lipids after the termination of fasting. The relatively constant level of total lipids during fasting in the muscles of females can be explained by its maintenance due to the priority, up to the full, use of energy lipids, as well as individual structural lipids. The increase of the cholesterol level in the muscles of males and females during fasting and after the resumption of nutrition is most likely due to increased gluconeogenesis and increased resistance of the organism. A specificity of the expenditure of certain physiologically significant polyunsaturated fatty acids was observed – docosahexaenoic in males and eicosapentaenoic in females, most probably due to their special physiological roles in the fish organism. The temporal changes in the content of different lipids and fatty acids during fasting and the investigated feeding resumption regimens differ, reflecting the physiological and biochemical status of the organism, as well as the functional role and significance of individual lipid groups in the organism.
